Already a successful salon owner, teacher and artist, Nick Stenson recently moved from his hometown of Chicago to New York City. There he plans to win over the Big Apple just as readily as he seduced the Windy City with his charm and considerable talent.
Growing up with a dedicated hairdresser for a mother, Nick's choice of beauty school seemed predestined. What he didn't expect, was that he also had a natural inclination toward teaching. "My beauty school teacher actually had a nervous breakdown," he remembers, "so I taught the last four months of our class!"
Nick opened Caviar the Color Specialists Salon in Chicago in 2002, and within a very short time, clients were filling the chairs, drawn to the high level of service and excellence. "I still have clients who have been with us since the very beginning," he comments. "I firmly believe a successful salon is based on the culture and the relationships you build over the years. That's the reason that people refer their friends."
In 2003, a local Matrix representative was convinced that Nick would be a good fit for the company. So Nick joined the education team at the entry level and in just seven years has progressed through the ranks. He was selected to be one of the first eight Matrix Artistic Directors, and his presentation at Matrix Imagination in Palm Springs in January of 2011 earned him a standing ovation.
As a result of his impressive haircoloring skills, Nick is sourced extensively by a wide variety of publications, including Modern Salon, American Salon and Sophisticate's Hairstyle Guide. He has also been rated as the top stylist in Chicago by Chicago Bride magazine. Nick was a finalist in the 2012 NAHA Colorest section and Contemporary Classic.
Now Nick is pursuing new challenges-he is currently dividing his time between Caviar in Chicago, and new opportunities in New York City. "This move makes sense," he says. "I will be closer to Matrix headquarters so I can be more involved in a number of projects. Plus I have a new agent and will be pursuing session and celebrity work. I'm very excited to move to the next level and I can't wait for what lies ahead!"
